It makes it hard to find and more desirable. Antichi Angeli specialize in Antique looking Murano glass. Murano glass made by Antichi Angeli is very hard to find because it's limited hand made production. It's rarely imported outside of Murano, Italy. This magnificent very large glass amphora is a part of the South Florida Estate extensive private art glass collection. It's in excellent condition with authentic Murano label still attached. Antichi Angeli is run by the three brothers Collizzi, who follow in the footsteps of their father. The furnace concentrates on glasswork reproductions of antique vases and lamps and lanterns finished with traditional techniques. The furnace Antichi Angeli produces glass objects with traditional glassmaking traditions in Venice. Family traditions have always been considered the most important thing here in Murano, that's why Antichi Angeli has been doing this job since early generations.

The island of Murano is located 3km north of Venice in Italy and has been a prosperous commercial port since the 7th Century. Murano became the centre of Venetian glass making in 1291, when glass foundries were moved from Venice to reduce the risk of fires. At that time, Murano glass workers operated at the leading edge of glass technology; for example, they were the only Europeans that knew how to make mirrors! Consequently, they enjoyed great status and privilege but were not permitted to leave the Venetian lagoon area. Perhaps understandably, the Venetian Republic were very keen to preserve and retain their unique craft, but punishment for deserters was swift and sometimes extremely harsh.

Murano glass blower The glass workers of Murano are still following their age-old techniques today and although other countries such as China and the Czech Republic try to imitate the exquisite Venetian glass, they tend to be a poor copy. In jewellery, tell-tale signs can be greater weight and less clarity - the vibrancy of Murano glass is unmistakable, appearing to glow from within. Venetian glass is a glass product of particularly high quality, traditionally manufactured on the island of Murano, which neighbors Venice. The fame of Venetian glass is due to carefully guarded techniques which were developed during a period when glassware was still riddled with imperfections and was extremely difficult to make.

Venetian artisans perfected the creation of glass, keeping their product famously clear and free of occlusions. The glass is still well known today, and artisans from all over the world travel to Murano to learn Venetian glassblowing techniques from masters of the craft. In Venice, glass making artisans were highly prized due to their unique skills and the specialized techniques for making particularly high quality glass that they developed.

In 1291, rising concerns about fire within the city of Venice drove the city to ban glass making within Venice itself, moving the manufacture of the city's famous glass to Murano instead. On Murano, the secret of how to make Venetian glass was closely guarded; artisans were not allowed to leave and set up shop elsewhere. Ultimately, of course, the techniques used to create Venetian glass spread to other European cities, which took up the manufacture of the high quality, delicate glassware that had made Venice famous.
